Things To Consider in Spotting A Liar.
How can we spot lies that we're told, both white lies and the real whoppers? Try these tips from the experts: HEAR THE VOICES - Pay attention to voice changes such as pitch that changes from the normal or a voice cracks that's unsual. There may be also change in speech rate, either fast or slow as well as change in breathing pattern. These may indicate deceit. WATCH THE WORDS - First, they tend to use fewer first person pronouns such as I, me, mine. They don't "own" their message. Typical example would be; "The paperwork was sent yesterday", instead of "I sent it yesterday". Second, they use fewer exclusionary words such as but, nor, except, whereas. They seem to be troubled at complex thinking. LOOK AT THE EYES - They tend to look away while answering something that should be easy to answer. They have difficulty maintaining eye gaze. As for white lies, which are usually not shameful, they tend to actually increase their gaze. OBSERVING BODY LANGUAGE - Observing the "total person" is vital. Changes in small hand movements, inconsistent shrugs, with what's being said are also helpful signs. You should be keen in body posture changes at some particular points in a conversation. A person who talks a lot and who is now quiet or vice versa doesn't always mean he's lying, but it's a hot spot to evaluate. CHECK FOR EMOTIONAL "LEAKS". - Micro expressions that reflects on their faces often show what they're truly thinking, as opposed to what they'd like you to believe. But some, like lasting a quarter a second aren't a cinch to spot. Deliberate liars tend to layer on expressions like smiling to desguise a lie. But it isn't the frequency of the smile that matters, but the type of smile. If you're a good observer, you can see a trace of emotions leak through, says Ekman. |
